“Life Is a Flower” è una canzone del gruppo svedese Ace of Base, pubblicata in Europa nell’aprile 1998 come primo singolo dell’album Flowers. L’autore Jonas Berggren lo ha definito la sua canzone più rappresentativa con gli Ace of Base, perché racchiude l’essenza del gruppo con melodie solari, ritmi pop e un messaggio positivo.
Il testo ribadisce con insistenza un messaggio di leggerezza e speranza: la vita è fragile e preziosa come un fiore, e affrontarla con un sorriso permette di riflettere positività anche sugli altri. Accanto a questo tono luminoso c’è l’invocazione a “Mr. Agony”, simbolo della sofferenza, a concedere tregua e a mostrare cosa significhi vivere privi di vita autentica: un ammonimento a non sprecare il tempo nel dolore. Negli Stati Uniti venne diffuso in una versione alternativa, con un testo diverso e il titolo Whenever You’re Near Me. In patria ottenne il disco d’oro, mentre nel Regno Unito quello d’argento
La critica accolse il brano in maniera favorevole, sottolineandone la freschezza, l’ottimismo e la capacità della band di rinnovarsi pur mantenendo uno stile riconoscibile. Alcuni giornali lo descrissero come un pezzo quasi “religiosamente positivo” e un esempio di pop contagioso, ideale per la radio. Anche secondo i responsabili delle emittenti radiofoniche europee fu un ritorno fortunato per la band, che seppe adeguarsi ai cambiamenti della scena dance senza perdere la propria identità.
Oltre al successo commerciale, il brano rimase tra i più amati dai fan e dalla stessa band. Ne vennero girati due videoclip: il primo non fu mai completato, mentre il secondo, ideato da Jenny Berggren, mostrava i membri del gruppo su sfondi creati in green screen con scenografie minime e fu quello ufficialmente diffuso. Caricato su YouTube anni dopo, ha superato milioni di visualizzazioni, confermando la popolarità duratura della canzone.
