I Drifters cantano Under the Boardwalk:
Under the Boardwalk fu un grande successo dei Drifters; uscita nel 1964, parla di un ragazzo e una ragazza che si incontrano al mare e si danno appuntamento sotto un pontile, al riparo dal sole e da sguardi indiscreti. L’inizio si ricollega ad un’altra canzone dei Drifters, Up on the Roof, in cui la coppia si incontrava sopra il tetto di una casa; ma ora che fa caldo, quel posto non va più bene; è più comodo sistemarsi all’ombra, sotto il pontile. Under the Boardwalk è una classica canzone sul mare, l’estate, le vacanze, la spensieratezza.
La canzone è piuttosto particolare per via della strumentazione: comprende un triangolo, dei violini e un guiro (uno strumento a percussione tipico della musica cubana e caraibica). Anche il ritornello è piuttosto singolare, caratterizzato dal passaggio da una chiave maggiore a una minore.
La rivista statunitense Rolling Stone ha inserito Under the Boardwalk al numero 489 nella lista delle 500 migliori canzoni di sempre.
