Because The Night fu inizialmente concepita da Bruce Springsteen; quando il cantante si rese conto che quella canzone non avrebbe trovato posto nel suo album, pensò di passarla alla collega Patti Smith, che stava registrando nello studio a fianco; lei la riadattò ad una voce femminile, e compose il testo una sera in cui stava aspettando la telefonata del suo fidanzato Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith; essendo lontani si telefonavano di notte, per risparmiare; ma quella sera lui ritardava, e lei iniziò a scrivere il testo, riversandovi il suo desiderio di sentirlo; quando lui finalmente la chiamò, il brano era finito. Divenne una hit di grande successo, la più conosciuta tra le sue canzoni.
