“Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” è una canzone di Michael Jackson che segna l’inizio della sua fase più matura come artista; è infatti il suo primo brano solista su cui può esercitare un vero controllo creativo; qui diventa davvero una star completa: cantante, autore e performer.
L’idea della canzone gli è venuta all’improvviso: aveva questa melodia in testa e continuava a canticchiarla per casa. Non sapendo svilupparla bene da solo al pianoforte, chiese aiuto al fratello Randy per metterla giù. Quando la fece ascoltare al produttore Quincy Jones, decisero di inserirla nell’album ‘ Off the Wall’.
La madre di Michael rimase un po’ turbata dal titolo perché sembrava alludere al sesso, ma lui spiegò che il significato era aperto e poteva essere interpretato in modi diversi. La canzone parla di una sensazione fortissima di piacere e di energia, che può essere sia amore che attrazione fisica, ma anche semplicemente il divertimento e la libertà di lasciarsi andare. Lui descrive questo “potere” come qualcosa che ti prende completamente, ti fa sentire vivo e ti spinge a non fermarti mai. Quando dice “don’t stop ’til you get enough”, il senso è proprio questo: continua a vivere quel momento, quella felicità, quella passione, finché non ne hai abbastanza, senza pensare troppo o farti domande. Non è una storia complicata, ma più una celebrazione delle emozioni, del movimento, della musica; invita a lasciarsi andare al ritmo e continuare a ballare senza fermarsi. Il riferimento alla ‘forza‘ deriva molto probabilmente dal concetto di ‘Forza’ reso celebre dai film di “Star Wars”.
La canzone è un mix di disco e funk, molto ritmata e pensata per far ballare. Ha un tempo veloce e un arrangiamento ricco, con fiati, archi, chitarre e percussioni. All’inizio si sente Michael parlare, poi entra subito il ritmo. Una delle cose più caratteristiche è il modo in cui canta: usa spesso il falsetto e inserisce piccoli “tic” vocali, come singhiozzi, versi e interiezioni (“uh!”, “ooh!”), che diventeranno uno dei suoi segni distintivi.
Pubblicata nel 1979 come primo singolo dell’album ‘Off the Wall’, il brano ebbe un enorme successo: arrivò al numero uno negli Stati Uniti e in molti altri paesi, vendendo milioni di copie. È considerato uno dei pezzi disco più famosi di sempre e ha fatto vincere a Jackson anche il primo Grammy da solista.
Il video, molto innovativo per l’epoca, mostra Michael che balla su sfondi colorati, con effetti che lo moltiplicano in più versioni di sé stesso sullo schermo.
