“Killing in the Name” è una canzone dei Rage Against the Machine uscita nel 1992, nel loro primo album. È costruita su un riff di chitarra molto pesante e ripetitivo, suonato in accordatura drop-D, e unisce rock duro, punk, rap e funk. Il brano nasce da un’idea di Tom Morello e viene completato insieme agli altri membri del gruppo, con una musica che cresce poco alla volta fino a diventare sempre più aggressiva.
Il testo è una protesta contro gli abusi di potere, in particolare contro la violenza della polizia negli Stati Uniti. È ispirato al pestaggio di Rodney King e alle rivolte di Los Angeles del 1992, e ribadisce come chi dovrebbe proteggere i cittadini sia, a volte, lo stesso che perpetua ingiustizie. La frase più famosa della canzone dice che alcune persone che lavorano nelle forze dell’ordine sono le stesse che “bruciano le croci”, cioè richiama il Ku Klux Klan, per denunciare il razzismo e l’ipocrisia di certe istituzioni. Nel finale il cantante ripete più volte una frase di rifiuto totale dell’autorità, urlandola in modo sempre più violento, come gesto di ribellione.
La canzone ha creato molte polemiche per il linguaggio esplicito e per il messaggio politico, tanto che in alcuni casi è stata censurata o trasmessa per errore in versione integrale. Nonostante questo, è diventata uno dei brani più famosi del gruppo e uno dei simboli della loro identità. È presente in varie classifiche sulle migliori canzoni rock, migliori brani per chitarra, e anche nella lista delle 500 migliori canzoni di tutti i tempi secondo la rivista Rolling Stone. Nel 2009, grazie a una campagna di protesta contro il dominio dei talent show, la canzone è arrivata sorprendentemente al numero uno delle classifiche natalizie nel Regno Unito. La campagna incoraggiava l’acquisto massiccio di questa canzone per evitare che per il quinto anno consecutivo in cima alle classifiche ci finisse il vincitore di X Factor.
“Killing in the Name” è rimasta nel tempo un inno di protesta contro l’autorità considerata ingiusta, spesso usata in contesti politici e sociali, e rappresenta al meglio lo spirito dei Rage Against the Machine: musica aggressiva, messaggio diretto e rifiuto di obbedire a un potere percepito come corrotto.
