‘What the World Needs Now Is Love‘ è la canzone con cui Jackie DeShannon ebbe grandissimo successo in anni in cui l’America aveva opinioni contrastanti sulla guerra del Vietnam. Può essere letta come un appello alla pace nel mondo e un messaggio di amore universale.
La composizione del testo ha richiesto una lunga gestazione; Hal David, dopo aver individuato il tema e la frase portante del brano, non sapeva come continuarlo, e la cosa rimase in elaborazione per circa 2 anni, finché poi non ebbe l’ispirazione per le due strofe; allora riuscì a completare la canzone rapidamente
Per la melodia si optò per un ritmo cadenzato a tempo di valzer, che ispirasse dolcezza.
Inizialmente il brano fu proposto a Dionne Warwik, ma lo rifiutò ritenendolo troppo country per le sue corde. Molti artisti poi, nel corso del tempo, ne fecero delle cover.
