“Another One Bites the Dust” una canzone dei Queen uscita nel 1980, scritta dal bassista John Deacon, ed è stata uno dei loro più grandi successi mondiali. È diventata famosa soprattutto per il giro di basso molto forte e riconoscibile, ispirato alla canzone “Good Times” degli Chic, e ha portato i Queen al numero uno negli Stati Uniti, cosa non scontata per una rock band inglese in quel periodo.
Il testo usa l’espressione inglese “to bite the dust”, che significa morire o perdere. Parla di scontri di potere, di conflitto e di sopravvivenza. Usa immagini violente come spari e persone che “cadono” per raccontare una situazione in cui uno dopo l’altro vengono sconfitti o eliminati. Non è per forza una storia di gangster o di guerra: può essere anche una metafora della vita, delle relazioni o del lavoro, dove qualcuno approfitta di te, ti toglie tutto e ti lascia solo. Il narratore si rivolge a chi lo ha ferito o tradito e gli dice che, anche se è stato messo a terra, ora è pronto a reagire. Il ritornello ripetuto dà l’idea di una serie continua di cadute, come se nessuno fosse al sicuro. Alla fine il messaggio è di resistenza e rivalsa: dopo essere stato colpito, il protagonista è ancora in piedi e pronto a combattere, senza farsi schiacciare di nuovo.
Dal punto di vista musicale il brano è particolare perché non usa sintetizzatori: quasi tutti i suoni sono creati con basso, chitarre, pianoforte e batteria, spesso registrati e poi manipolati. Deacon suona la maggior parte degli strumenti, mentre Brian May aggiunge effetti di chitarra e Roger Taylor un ritmo ripetuto di batteria. Freddie Mercury canta in modo molto intenso, tanto che in studio si è spinto al limite della voce.
All’inizio i Queen non erano convinti di pubblicarla come singolo, ma dopo un concerto Michael Jackson suggerì a Freddie Mercury che sarebbe stata una hit, e aveva ragione. La canzone ha vinto premi importanti, è stata usata in film, spot pubblicitari ed eventi sportivi ed è diventata il singolo più venduto dei Queen.
Negli anni è stata anche al centro di polemiche curiose, come quella dei messaggi nascosti se ascoltata al contrario, mai confermati seriamente. Oggi è famosa anche perché il suo ritmo è vicino a quello consigliato per il massaggio cardiaco, e viene usata persino per insegnare la rianimazione. In sintesi, è una canzone semplice all’ascolto ma molto potente, che parla di cadute e della forza di rialzarsi.
