‘Somebody That I Used to Know ‘ è una canzone di Gotye a cui partecipa anche la cantante neozelandese Kimbra.
Gotye ha composto il brano a partire da come si sentiva quando le sue storie sentimentali finivano, riportando le sue sensazioni e sentimenti contrastanti. Il ritmo della canzone è perlopiù sommesso e sfumato, come ad esprimere incertezza e sofferenza. Ad un certo punto la voce di Kimbra esprime il punto di vista femminile sulle dinamiche di questi rapporti.
Nella composizione del brano Gotye si è avvalso di frammenti del brano “Seville” del chitarrista Luiz Bonfá del 1967; c’è anche uno xilofono che suona una melodia basata sulla canzoncina per bambini “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep“.
La canzone ha avuto un successo planetario e ha vinto numerosi premi.
In questo video Gotye canta “Somebody That I Used to Know”: lui appare nudo in una stanza che piano piano si colora. Durante il ritornello, anche il cantante viene dipinto, fino ad essere quasi indistinguibile dalla parete. Poi appare Kimbra.

Gotye non ha voluto mettere pubblicità nel video musicale del brano su YouTube, poiché ritiene che ci sia già troppa pubblicità nel mondo.
Sono state fatte moltissime cover di questo brano, e Gotye nel 2012 ha pensato di omaggiarle creando personalmente un video remix fatto con centinai di segmenti di cover prenseti online; ne è risultata una nuova versione unica del brano, intitolata “Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra”.
