‘Le Freak‘ è una canzone dal ritornello orecchiabile e coinvolgente, che subito mette allegria e voglia di ballare.
Secondo quanto riportato da Nile Rodgers, la canzone fu ideata durante la notte di Capodanno del 1977; la cantante Grace Jones aveva invitato lui e il bassista Bernard Edwards allo Studio 54 per prendere parte alle registrazioni del suo nuovo album; ma dopo che ebbero fatto la fila fuori al freddo per entrare, il buttafuori li mandò via in modo scortese perché i loro nomi non erano stati inseriti nella lista.
Un volta tornati a casa, comprensibilmente arrabbiati per questo trattamento, in meno di venti minuti composero la canzone, il cui ritornello originariamente non diceva ‘Freak out!’, ma ‘Fuck off! (ovvero ‘vaffanculo’), cioè quello che il portiere gli aveva detto sbattendogli la porta in faccia; poi pensando che non avrebbero potuto usare un’espressione del genere in radio, la cambiarono in ‘Freak out’.
Il brano ha avuto grandissimo successo sia in America che in Europa.

Like the days of ‘Stomping at the Savoy’…: ‘Stompin’ at the Savoy’ è una canzone jazz composta da Edgar Sampson nel 1934. Fa riferimento al Savoy Ballroom, una grande sala da ballo situata ad Harlem , New York . Dagli anni ’20 agli anni ’40 fu punto di riferimento per la musica jazz e vide nascere molti nuovi balli, come il charleston e il lindy hop. ‘Stomp’ è un termine che significa ‘battere il piede sul pavimento’, e fa riferimento ai quei nuovi modi di ballare, molto ritmati.
